Hairspray

I haven’t seen the stage show or the original movie so I had no idea what I was in for. It’s a musical about black rights and fat rights. The music is very catchy. Of particular note, John Travolta dresses in drag and plays the mother of the main character. Christopher Walken plays his/her husband. […]

I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry

Chuck (Adam Sandler) and Larry (Kevin James) get married to maintain death benefits for Larry’s kids. It’s funny but sometimes comes across as a gay rights documentary. Pay the theatre admission, it’s a great summer movie.

Gwoemul (The Host)

A South Korean monster movie. The plot is ridiculously simple: toxic waste is dumped into the Han River and it creates a monster. A little girl is kidnapped by the monster and is kept alive in it’s den/nest. The little girls family sets out to rescue her, only there’s one problem… they’re all idiots. I’ll […]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

This is the fifth movie in the series. There’s not much to say; it’s obviously a great movie and worth the theatre admission price.

Letters from Iwo Jima

This movie tells the story of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers. It starts months before the invasion and shows what the living conditions were like, the sheer enormity of the tunnelling that was done, and the political conditions that the commanding officers had to deal with. It was very interesting to […]

See No Evil

Again, another teenage-torture horror movie. A group of juvenile delinquents is brought to a run-down hotel as part of an inmate work program. There’s a psycho loose in the hotel (wrestler Kane) who’s gimmick is that he yanks out his victims eyes. Clever title isn’t it. Stay away from this movie, it’s incredibly dumb.

Live Free or Die

No it’s not the new Die Hard movie. This is about the worlds worst, dumbest criminal and the adventures he has with his equally stupid friends. Skip this. It’s a complete waste of time and I wish I had never watched it.

Rare Birds

I would put this in my all-time top 1o list of favourite movies. It’s a Canadian movie based on a Canadian book. It’s as good as it gets. William Hurt plays Dave, an over-the-hill, recently divorced, operator of an empty restaurant located in the middle of nowhere, Newfoundland. His neighbour, Phonce, dreams up a scam […]

Notes on a Scandal

Judi Dench plays an evil lesbian school teacher who gets some dirt on the beautiful young teacher (Kate Blanchett) and makes her life hell. This movie proves how versatile an actress Judi Dench is. Worth watching but I should caution that it will not put you in a good mood.

Transformers

I had a perma-grin for the entire evening. I got to re-live my childhood all over again. This movie is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. “Autobots, roll out!”

License to Wed

Robin Williams plays Reverend Frank, an intrusive minister who is putting a young couple through his special marriage preparation course. It was funny; entertaining for an hour and a half. The best part is near the middle where the couple have to take care of the creepy robotic baby twins. I’d pay the theatre price.

Miss Potter

This is the story of the life of Beatrix Potter, the famous children’s author. If you’re ever in a bad mood, this is the movie for you to watch. It will melt the hardest of hearts. I’ve added it to my permanent collection.

Primeval

An expedition is organized to capture a giant crocodile that has been haunting northern Burundi. The group spends as much time fighting against the local civil war as they do fighting with the crocodile. There was a surprising amount of social commentary on the state of Africa. I was glad I watched it, it was […]
